Happy New Year!

As a 5th grade teacher, it fills me with pride to see our students take their learning beyond the classroom and turn it into meaningful action. This year, the 5th graders investigated two major issues affecting communities both in the past and present: poverty and human impact on Earth (climate change, pollution, and deforestation). Through research, thoughtful discussions, and reflections, students used what they learned to create impactful Public Service Announcements (PSAs) designed to raise awareness and encourage positive action within our own community.

As part of putting their learning into meaningful practice, our 5th graders brought their understanding to life by running a hot chocolate sale during Exhibition Night. Students took leadership of every aspect of the event, including designing and creating eye-catching hot chocolate signs to advertise the sale and help it run smoothly. By synergizing their individual strengths, collaborating as a team, and problem-solving in real time, students experienced firsthand how working together can amplify their impact. Using what they learned to make a positive impact on our school community, this student-led initiative allowed them to take real-world action in support of those in need. Every dollar raised was donated directly to the San Diego Food Bank to help local families.

We are incredibly proud of their hard work, compassion, creativity, and commitment to making a difference. Thank you for supporting our 5th graders as they work to create a more positive world—one cup of hot chocolate at a time!
