USING OUR VOICES TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
alt_text
This month, our fifth grade students connected science learning to real world impact through a special visit from Darrel Larson of Give Clean Water. His presentation launched our unit centered on the essential question: How can I use my voice to amplify the voices of others to make our world a better place? Students learned about communities facing limited access to clean water and explored how water scarcity affects health, education, and daily life. Through powerful stories and discussion, they were challenged to think beyond their own experiences and consider how empathy can lead to meaningful action.

In class, students have been studying Earth’s spheres, the hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere, and examining how these systems interact. Through this lens, they are researching global water scarcity and the impact of unclean water on people and ecosystems. This work reflects our core values of leadership, excellence, justice, and community as students think critically, collaborate, and explore issues of fairness and global responsibility.

To bring their learning to life, students are collecting recycled bottles to design and build their own water filtration systems. This hands-on project allows them to apply science concepts while developing solutions inspired by real world challenges. By combining research, engineering, and compassion, students are discovering that science is not just about understanding the world, it is about improving it. As students continue this unit, they are learning that even small voices can create big change when used with purpose, empathy, and collaboration.
