| Kindergarten Travels Back in Time! |
Our kindergarten class is nearing the end of Unit 4: Long Ago & Now, and it has been such a fun and exciting journey through history! Students are learning how life long ago compares to life today by exploring topics like school, homes, toys and games, food, and transportation from the past. The classroom has been filled with curiosity, laughter, and lots of hands-on learning.
One of our favorite experiences was discovering what school was like long ago. Students practiced writing on slates with chalk just like children did in one-room schoolhouses. When learning about homes long ago, students discovered that families often had to build their homes and furniture by hand. To bring this idea to life, students became little builders and constructed log houses using Lincoln Logs. They loved designing their own homes and seeing how houses might have been built in the past.
Students also had a blast exploring toys and games from long ago. They quickly learned that kids in the past didn’t have electronics—so they had to get creative! Our class had so much fun playing with traditional toys like wooden tops, jacks, tiddlywinks, and wooden ball catchers, just like children did many years ago.
One of the most exciting highlights of the unit has been our PBL project about food from long ago. Students learned that families used to grow their own food and make everything from scratch. To experience this firsthand, students made handmade bread and butter! We celebrated their hard work with a special class picnic, where students enjoyed their bread and butter from little metal pails, just like children long ago. It was such a joyful and memorable experience!
This unit has been filled with hands-on activities, creativity, and excitement as our kindergarteners explored what life was like in the past. Learning about history has truly come alive in our classroom!
