| Hold On Tight! Third Grade is on the Move! |
Third grade has been busy diving into Unit 5: Force and Motion, where learning feels more like an adventure than a lesson. Guided by the question, “How can we discover the effects of forces and motion through the engineering of a game?” students have been exploring key physics concepts at school while bringing their ideas to life at home through the creation of their very own carnival-inspired games. From planning and sketching to testing ideas in class, they’ve been applying concepts like Isaac Newton’s three laws of motion in creative and meaningful ways as they prepare for Exhibition Night.
In the classroom, students have been investigating how forces like gravity, friction, and energy affect motion through hands-on experiments and discussions. They also had the exciting opportunity to watch live footage and closely follow the progress of Artemis II, connecting their learning to real-world space exploration. This experience helped bring their studies of rockets and motion to life as they observed how these same scientific principles are used beyond Earth.
As if that wasn’t enough, third graders took on a “Mission to Mars” STEAM challenge. After researching the planet Mars and the realities of space exploration, students were given a bold task: design a way for humans to survive there. With no return trip, they worked in teams to create models of future Martian colonies, complete with shelters, greenhouses, and energy sources. Students also built their own “rovers” using eggs and engineered landing devices to help their rovers land safely on Mars without cracking. Their projects showcased not only scientific understanding, but also creativity, teamwork, and innovation.
From studying physics in the classroom to building games at home and dreaming up life on Mars, third grade is proving that learning through exploration can take you just about anywhere.
