Welcome Back!

Monthly Recap

Welcome Back to School! We are excited to begin the school year and get to know our students, families, and staff. As the school counselors, we are here to support students as they navigate their feelings, friendships, challenges, and goals throughout the school year.

Every month, we will be sharing counselor updates about SOAR lessons, school wide events, SEL tips of the month, and local resources.

What does a School Counselor Do?

I can help with...
  • Making friends
  • Managing big feelings
  • Solving Problems
  • Handling Conflict
  • School Worries
  • Setting Goals
  • Getting Help

SEL Tip of the Month: Back to School Conversation Starters 💬

Try Daily Check-Ins 🌱

Instead of asking, "How was school?", ask these questions:
  1. Who made you smile today?
  2. What is something new you learned?
  3. When did you feel proud about yourself?
  4. Did anything feel tricky today?
  5. Who did you help today?
  6. What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

This is an easy way to start conversations at home with your student(s) and engage about their school day.

This Month in Counseling

🦅 SOAR Lessons

TK-5: Meet the Counselor & Minute Meetings
  • All students got a chance to meet the new elementary school counselor. Students in Gr. 3-5 had an opportunity to do minute meetings, where they were asked about their first week of school, a challenge, and an accomplishment. New students have also had an opportunity to meet with me.
  • 💡 Conversation Starter: Ask your student what is one thing a school counselor does at school. For TK-1, they may show hand motions and for grades 2-5, they should be able to tell you.
TK-5: Conflict Resolution
  • All students have/will learn how to resolve conflicts using the S.N.A.P. method. Students have a chance to practice resolving conflicts using this quick method.
  • 💡 Conversation Starter: Ask your student how they use the SNAP method to solve conflicts.
TK & Kindergarten:
  • Students in TK & Kinder received an additional lesson on "What it Means to be a Good Friend."
  • 💡 Conversation Starter: Ask your student the three ways they can show what it means to be a good friend.
6-8 grade: Google Classroom & Counseling Support
  • All students received lessons on the ways I can support them as their School Counselor and important information on Google Classroom.
  • Minute Meeting check-ins with all students in the school who are new to me!
  • 💡Conversation Starter: Ask your student to show you their grades in Google Classroom!

🌟 Habit of the Month: Think Win-Win

This month during SOAR lessons, we have been focusing on Habit 4: Think Win-Win. When we think win-win, we are looking for the best solution where everyone feels seen, heard, and respected. During our conflict resolution SOAR lessons, students are practicing when it looks like to have a disagreement or conflict and understanding how different perspectives can help resolve the conflict. When we listen to each other, share ideas, and work together to find the solution, everyone wins.

💡 Conversation Starter: How can you make (this) a win-win?

Family Connection 💛

Building Belonging

The new school year brings many new experiences - new classroom, new routines, new friendships, and new expectations. One of the most important things we can do to help our students be successful is to increase their sense of belonging. Families can support this by asking your student(s) about their day, encourage them to include others, celebrating their strengths, and reminding your student that they are part of the Elevate community.

💡 Conversation Starter: What is one thing that helps you feel like you belong at school?
