Tips For The Cold & Flu Season

Dear Families,

As the weather starts to turns cooler (hopefully soon!), cold and flu season follows. To keep our classrooms healthy, happy, and learning, we are sharing a few quick reminders below on how to prevent illness and what to do if your child starts feeling under the weather.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep our students and staff safe and healthy this season!

Everyday Prevention Tips

Building a few healthy habits at home helps protect our entire school community:

  • Master the 20-Second Handwash: Remind your child to wash their hands with soap and water before eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing their nose. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer works great on the go!
  • Practice the "Elbow Cough": Encourage kids to cough or sneeze into their inner elbow or a tissue rather than their hands.
  • Keep Hands Off Faces: Remind little ones to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth to keep germs at bay.
  • Get Vaccinated: The CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend an annual flu shot for everyone 6 months and older. It is the single most effective way to reduce severe illness and keep kids in class.
  • Fuel the Immune System: Ensure your child gets plenty of sleep each night, stays well-hydrated with water throughout the day, and eats balanced meals rich in fruits and vegetables to support natural immunity.

When to Keep Your Child Home

Knowing when to stay home keeps viruses from spreading rapidly through classrooms.

Please keep your student home if they experience:
  • A fever of 100°F or higher.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea.
  • A persistent, uncontrolled cough or severe sore throat.

The 24-Hour Rule: Your child may return to school once they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication (like Tylenol or Ibuprofen).

What Happens if Your Child Gets Sick at School

If a student develops a fever or becomes visibly unwell during the school day, they will wait comfortably in the health office, and a parent or designated emergency contact will be called for prompt pickup.

Health Office Direct Contact: For medical questions, chronic condition updates, or clearance notes, contact Ashley Madrid through Parentsquare or 858-751-4774 Option 1.
