Monthly Recap

September is a month of new beginnings. Students are learning new routines, getting to know their classmates, discovering what they enjoy, and figuring out how to navigate the ups and downs in the beginning of the school year.

This month, we continued to focus on building our community and supporting each other in the transition of the new school year.

It was also the start of Hispanic Heritage Month and Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, where all students received programming on mental health and celebrated Hispanic culture!

SEL Tip of the Month: Pause, Name, and Choose 🌱

When emotions get big, it can be hard to know what to do next.

Teach your child this simple three-step strategy:
  1. 🛑 Stop: Take a deep breath and count of 10
  2.  💭 Name: Ask your child, "What are they feeling?"
  3. ⭐️ Choose: Ask them, "What can I do to help?"

Remind them that having any feeling is okay and valid -- what matters is what we do next.

This Month in Counseling

TK-5: Teamwork
  • All students received a lesson on teamwork by using their C.L.U.E.'s strategy by working with a group to complete a puzzle, create their dream school, or using a teamwork train.
  • 💡 Conversation Starter: Ask your student how they use their C.L.U.E.'s when working on a team.

TK-5: Emotion Identification
  • All students have/will receive a lesson about identifying their emotions using the four Zones of Regulation and understanding how strong their emotion is by using the Feeling Thermometer.
  • Students also had a chance to practice identify which zone they would be in based on a given scenario.
💡 Conversation Starter: Have your student identify the four zones and rate the intensity for their feelings. Encourage them to practice sharing both the zones and the strength of their emotions with you.

TK & Kindergarten:
  • Students received a lesson on what it means to be a good leader. We read "I am a Leader" by David Parker, practiced with different scenarios and used "I am a leader" and "I am in charge of me" as a quick reminder.
  • Students received a lesson being respectful. We read My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook to learn how interrupting others is not being respectful to others. We practiced by walking around the room in four different ways and being respectful to themselves and others in the room.
  • 💡Conversation Starter: Ask your student how they can be a leader and how they are respectful to others.

6th grade: Coping Skills
  • Received lessons on stressors, mental health, and ways to cope with big feelings. We discussed how mental health is our backpack, and our stressors are those things we add in our backpack. Coping skills help us lighten the load!
  • 💡Conversation Starter: Ask your student to show you their favorite coping skills and when they use them!
7th-8th grade: Creating a Safety Net
  • Received lessons on suicide prevention and awareness. They learned how to A.C.T. to help those struggling with mental health.
  • 💡Conversation Starter: Ask your student to show you the safety net they made!

Habits of the Month!- Sharpening the Saw & Synergize

Sharpening the Saw 🪚
This month in EMS SOAR lessons, students learned about suicide prevention and coping skills through Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. We talked about taking care of our bodies, minds, hearts, and spirits, and practiced strategies like deep breathing, positive self talk, and reaching out to trusted adults. Students also learned how to support a friend who's struggling and that help is always available, including 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

💡Conversation Starter: Ask your child to share their favorite way to sharpen the saw!

Synergize 🤝
This month in EES SOAR lessons, students learned about teamwork through Habit 6: Synergize. We practiced doing new puzzles in teams about why it's important to continue to practice teamwork outside of SOAR lessons.

💡Conversation Starter: Ask your child how they syngerize with others.

Family Connection💛

Checking In Without Judgment
Kids are more likely to open up when they feel heard, not fixed. A simple check in can make a big difference. Try asking your student to rate how they're feeling on a scale of 1–10. Whatever number they share, respond with curiosity instead of judgment: "Thanks for telling me." If they're lower on the scale, ask, "What would help you move up even one number?" If they're at a 10, celebrate it and reflect together: "What helped you feel that way today?" This builds self-awareness and reminds them of the strategies that work for them. Most importantly, listen more than you talk, and let them know they can always come to you.
💡 Conversation Starter: On a scale of 1–10, how are you feeling today, and what's one thing that would help you feel even a little better?
